Nairobi: India’s Amit Khatri won silver medal in the 10,000m race walk for men at the World U-20 Athletics Championship on Saturday after the 4x400m mixed relay team won bronze a few days back.

Khatri clocked 42:17.94 minutes to finish behind host country’s Heristone Wanyoni of Kenya, who won the gold with a timing of 42:10.84 minutes. Khatri did lead the race till Wanyoni overtook him during the last two laps of the race.

“As it’s a high altitude so breathing was a problem for me, It was my first Intl competition and I won silver for India. I’m happy with silver at least I could fulfil the hopes of India,” Amit said after the race.

Paul McGrath of Spain won the bronze medal with a timing of 42:26.11 minutes. Both gold and bronze medal winners recorded their personal best timings at the event.

Earlier this week, on Wednesday, the Indian mixed 4x400m relay team had won bronze to clinch the country’s fifth medal in the history of U20 World Athletics Championships.

The Indian quartet of Bharath S, Priya Mohan, Summy and Kapil clocked 3:20.60 seconds to finish third in the final.

Before Wednesday’s bronze in mixed 4x400m relay, India had won medals through Seema Antil (bronze in the discus throw, 2002), Navjeet Kaur Dhillon (bronze in the discus throw, 2014), Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra (gold in javelin throw, 2016) and Hima Das (gold in 400m, 2018) in the world U-20 meet.
